Jesse Osborne-Lanthier (Noir) is a talented self-educated artist from Canada. Devoted to experimentation and boundless composition, this musician explores different styles by applying a truly personal approach which provides his creation with unexpected twists and cutting edge sounds. Jesse was mainly active in Canada during his early years (2007-2011). However, he has managed to widen his sphere of action, reaching many European countries and of course performing at some of the top festivals and cities. Audiences in Germany, Spain, France and Denmark, among others, can attest to this.

Jesse’s last work, which is entitled “Athenaeum of Unedited, Superannuated, Incomplete, Unreleased, Intimate Works, 2011-2013” (“AUSIUOW”), is clear proof of his one-of-a-kind offering. The album, released as tape by Hobo Cult Records earlier this year represents a little in size but intense jewel, and a superb effort by the Canadian. Maybe heterogeneity and versatility are the two words that best describe the content of this awesome work. “AUSIUOW” provides listeners with a mix of genres, ranging from noise to electroacoustic, or even experimental techno and dub-techno. Besides this diverse and appealing stylistic “crossroad”, a key aspect of its sound is that all tracks have been recorded live between 2011 and 2013 at venues in Montreal, Berlin, Barcelona and Nottingham, and the audio was mixed directly at the live setting, with no processing or editing, except for slight volume adjustments and compression as he himself explains. Indeed, this approach adds an instinctive, artistic and powerful feeling which transforms each one of its pieces into sound sculptures, combining abrasive textures, evocative soundscapes, glitchy effects and killer rhythms.

“Athenaeum of Unedited, Superannuated, Incomplete, Unreleased, Intimate Works, 2011-2013” shows that boundaries are nothing but an obstacle that Jesse Osborne-Lanthier clearly and successfully overcomes. Potential listeners should easily get lost in the myriad of hints and details he offers, letting themselves go in an overwhelming journey to the unknown. Undeniably, this hybrid tape, limited to 100 copies, ought to be stored alongside the prized possessions of any record collector.
