Interdisciplinary journal for audio archaeology and sonic exploration.

Established on March 13, 2010, Secret Thirteen operates as a curatorial platform and archive dedicated to timeless, boundary-pushing sound and art. We function as a filter against the ephemeral nature of trend-driven culture, focusing instead on long-form mixes, in-depth analysis, and interviews with unique artists and label founders.

Our core series is not defined by genre, but by narrative. We view our mixes as personal cartographies of sound—heterogeneous, eclectic, and often dense in rotation. From academic composition and industrial rhythms to outlier electronics and obscure cuts, we encourage artists to weave threads between the 80s, 90s, and the future, creating a vivid map of interrelations that stands the test of time.

The number 13 symbolizes the transition—the death of matter and the birth of spirit. It represents a passage to a higher level of perception. As Aldous Huxley noted: “After silence that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music.” Secret Thirteen adopts this ethos, aiming to distance the listener from the noise of corporeality and guide them toward a deeper, more emotional understanding of the sonic landscape. We champion unpredictability and change as vital forces.

The concept was born in the bleak, post-industrial surroundings of Panevėžys, Lithuania, founded by Justinas Mikulskis. What began as a local signal has grown into a global node for the underground. Over the years, our scope has expanded beyond digital publishing to include the Flatlines event series, a physical tape label, and a residency on Berlin’s Cashmere Radio.

Secret Thirteen operates on a dedicated DIY basis, fueled by a passion for discovery. We have cultivated partnerships with forward-thinking festivals and platforms such as Unsound, Berlin Atonal, LEV Festival, Up To Date, and SHAPE, continuing to serve as a bridge between established pioneers and emerging visionaries.
