Mark Harwood explores a surreal world of lost sounds from avant-garde roots to ancient melodies and distant echoes.
Mark Harwood explores a surreal world of lost sounds from avant-garde roots to ancient melodies and distant echoes.
“Secret Thirteen Mix 040” is a strikingly eclectic compilation that merges 18 diverse records from such authoritative musicians as Karlheinz Stockhausen, Maria Tănase, Henning Christiansen, The Shadow Ring, Nate Young, and Christian Vander, among others.
The mind behind the mix is Mark Harwood (b. 1972), an Australian publisher, event curator, and sound artist currently residing in London, United Kingdom. With nearly 20 years of experience in the sonic arts, Harwood now publishes both books and music through his label, Penultimate Press. This label also distributes others, including Graham Lambkin's 'Kye' label, and has released three of Lambkin's books of writings and artwork. Harwood formerly owned Synaesthesia Records in Australia, which released works by notable artists such as Hecker, Robin Fox, Francis Plagne, and Bernard Parmegiani. Recently, Harwood’s nuanced record “Alcor,” under his Astor pseudonym, was released on the Kye imprint. His music is characterized by delicately processed field recordings, distant thunder, and the crackle of handheld microphones, blended with spectral instrumentation, piano, and electronics—a sonic experience worthy of deep exploration.
“Secret Thirteen Mix 040” is a cosmopolitan, meticulously curated selection, shifting between exotic sound expressions and bold melodic arrangements. Though each record is distinct and spans genres from modern classical to folk and experimental, Harwood skillfully weaves them into an aesthetic unity. This foundational soundscape is enriched with spoken word, archaic world instruments, and refined, inventive compositions. The emotional trajectory is more than intense; it is an uncanny psychological journey into the listener's subconscious, achieved through subtle dissonance and modern sonic possibilities. Lo-fi melodies and occasional crackling, sparkling, and noise-filled atmospheres coalesce into a timeless masterpiece that melds eras, traditions, cultures, and musical philosophies.
“Secret Thirteen Mix 040” is akin to Brice Marden’s existential, abstract expressionist drawing “Aphrodite Study,” embodying the intellectual depth of minimalism, where a web of meandering lines forms a fictional, dramatic body that accentuates the essential qualities of touch, texture, color, and tone.
