She Past Away
She Past Away shares 23 favourite tracks from the roots of their darkwave sound. Stark electronics, distorted guitars and dramatic voices trace a personal route through post-punk and gothic rock.
Listen to the mix
She Past Away’s selection brings together 23 influential tracks released between 1980 and 1997. This selection includes distinctive works by The Sisters of Mercy, The Cure, Joy Division, Grauzone, DAF, Death In June, and others, evoking the distinct, slightly anarchistic spirit of the 1980s alternative music scene. Each track is a favorite of She Past Away, carefully chosen to showcase the songs that have shaped their sound and deep connection to Goth culture.
Behind the selection is She Past Away, a darkwave band from Bursa, Turkey. Formed in 2006 by Volkan Caner (vocals & guitar) and Idris Akbulut (bass), the band expanded in 2009 with the addition of Doruk Ozturkcan on electronic drums. After an extensive demo-recording session, their first digital EP, Kasvetli Kutlama, was released by Remoov Records in 2010, followed by their debut vinyl album, Belirdi Gece, launched by Fabrika Records. Blending gothic lyrics with intense guitars, brooding vocals, and immersive drum effects, the band revives the experimental edge of the darkwave era, influenced by icons like The Sisters of Mercy, Bauhaus, and Suicide.
Voice and electronics
KaS Product concentrates urgent vocals and minimal electronics into a stark encounter. Christian Death’s theatrical delivery and wiry guitars expose another strand of the band’s listening.
The mix explores insistent rhythms, vibrant soundscapes and powerful vocal performances that capture the essence of 1980s darkwave, new wave, post-punk, and gothic rock. Built on evolving rhythms and the melodic bite of sharp, distorted electric guitars, the mix emphasizes dramatic lyrics and striking vocal delivery. The mixing is precise, yet it conveys emotional depth and a strong sense of identity. This blend of palpable melancholy with frenetic, sometimes ironic moods creates an almost cinematic experience, like the soundtrack to a fictional thriller charged with chaotic love themes. It’s a timeless selection of distinctive tracks that have left a lasting mark on the evolution of alternative rock.
Melancholy and momentum
Clan of Xymox offers a melodic, inward point of reference among the colder selections. Joy Division closes the mix in a familiar but deeply affecting atmosphere.
The selection is reminiscent of the mysterious, dark art of Hugh O’Donnell, especially his abstract drawing Body Echo 26, where figurative and nebulous lines reflect a refined, enigmatic past.
