Secret Thirteen starts a new series of articles where we will present diverse album covers with one specific accent. For the first entry we have chosen a skull as a dominant object playing an important role in the whole visual composition.

What is a skull? A skull is a bony structure in the head of many animals that supports the structures of the face and forms a cavity for the brain. But this is only a medical term of the skull. This time we will visually explore human skull and its symbolism in the underground music scene. In these days a skull is more related to fashion or stands as an interior detail. Once it was an era when death and mortality were the main associations. These artworks show transience, equality and fragility of all human beings. Our list ranges from the sarcastic, friendly to the fearsome and ritualistic interpretations. Seems that no one of these artists are afraid to explore mortality and existential meaninglessness in their creations. In order to adapt to journal’s concept we also draw attention to the aesthetics, suggestibility, originality and perfection of the artworks. Every reader can hear the balance between music and art by listening works added below the album covers.

* If you want to suggest us some more album covers with skull motives, you are always welcome to do this via email or in the comment section.

  1. The original Velvet Underground LP White Light White Heat. The cover seems to be black with white text but theres the back of plane fuselage with a skull + cross bones on the tail fin in black.

  2. The Rolling Stones have a 50th anniversary gift box out now with a 2cd concert, I believe, and a 750 ml bottle of Dan Akroyd's Crystal Skull vodka (bottle shaped as a skull), sold in the liquor store for a c-note. It's a 3d skull.
