36
36 moves from ambient stillness into the submerged pulse of dub techno, threading twenty records into an autumnal audio collage. Two of his own compositions meet Biosphere, Tim Hecker, Deepchord and Burial in a deeply emotional, continuously unfolding sequence.
Listen to the mix
STM 036 is a sensuous and nebulous musical compilation that fills autumn with more nostalgic memories and benign melancholy than colorful leaves and rain can bring. The selected music is emotionally powerful and profound, so it should find a direct path to every intellectual music lover’s heart.
The author of the mix is Dennis Huddleston, widely known as 36 (pronounced three-six), an ambient music artist and advocate from the United Kingdom. Officially starting his career in 2009, Huddleston has published a significant number of self-released albums and EPs on his own imprint, 3six Recordings. The luxurious limited physical editions and design aesthetics always match the quality of the music. Huddleston develops fluid, deeply emotional loop-based compositions with particular emphasis on harmony and melancholy, incorporating elements of modern classical, drone, and experimental sound motifs. He has also recorded an ambient mix for the respected ASIP (A Strangely Isolated Place) platform.
In the records
STM 036 is a contemplative musical selection that leads to the essence of ambient and dub-techno music. It is a carefully crafted audio collage of twenty sonorous and expansive records mainly released in the twenty-first century. Notable musicians such as Biosphere, Tim Hecker, Burial, Deepchord, Stars of the Lid, ASC, and other talents contribute to the progressively developing atmosphere. Two of 36’s marvelous compositions are included as well. The selection is based on a sublime and enigmatic ambience that floats over an occasionally emerging meditative rhythmic substructure. This viscous, profound, and hypnotizing wholeness is full of oscillating micro-sounds and gently combined effects. There is no way back when you press the play button.
STM 036 is like René Magritte’s haunting surrealistic painting “The False Mirror,” where the representation of the human condition reflects a desire to understand existence and achieve lifelong ambitions.
