Album Covers with Skulls
A skull moves between mortality, ritual, humour and provocation across these album covers.

Secret Thirteen starts a new series of articles where we will present diverse album covers with one specific accent. For the first entry we have chosen a skull as a dominant object playing an important role in the whole visual composition.
What is a skull? A skull is a bony structure in the head of many animals that supports the structures of the face and forms a cavity for the brain. But this is only a medical term of the skull. This time we will visually explore the human skull and its symbolism in the underground music scene. These days a skull is more related to fashion or stands as an interior detail. There was once an era when death and mortality were the main associations. These artworks show transience, equality and fragility of all human beings. Our list ranges from the sarcastic, friendly to the fearsome and ritualistic interpretations. It seems that none of these artists are afraid to explore mortality and existential meaninglessness in their creations. In order to adapt to journal’s concept we also draw attention to the aesthetics, suggestibility, originality and perfection of the artworks. The covers invite readers to explore the relationship between music and visual art.
